NPB High School Draft 2007

Yesterday afternoon the NPB teams had their leadership get together and do the high school part of this year's new talent draft.

Sadly, this year's draft really served to show the major flaw in the current system. Right now, every team names their first round pick at the same time, and then if more than one team names the same player, there's a lottery for that player, and then each team that didn't get the player has to name another first-round pick (and again, if they name the same player, there's another lottery). This year, three players were named by 11 teams -- Osaka Toin slugger Sho Nakata was named by the Fighters, Tigers, Buffaloes, and Hawks; Sendai Ikuei 155km/h hurler Yoshinori Satoh was named by the Eagles, Giants, Swallows, Dragons, and Baystars; and Narita pitcher Yuuki Karakawa was named by the Marines and Carp. (The Seibu Lions were not involved in the first round as a punishment for illegal scouting and payments earlier.)

I'm happy the Fighters got Sho Nakata -- I really am -- but, it does illustrate the problem with the system, where the Japan Series champion gets the #1 slugger in the draft class. Fortunately, the draft system is changing yet AGAIN next year -- back to the one draft system, with high school and industry/college guys all entering at once.

Anyway, I went ahead and translated sponichi's list of draftees as best as I could. Notably, there are no Saga Kita kids here; no Yusuke Nomura from Koryo. Honestly, I think the Baystars did a good job grabbing Atori Ohta in the second round, too.
